International Day of Play!

For some play is a luxury, as for others it is essential.

This hidden gem promotes resilience, creativity, and innovation.

It also helps build relationships, improves control, and feeds the problem-solving part of the brain.

Overall, it lays the foundations within child development, physically and cognitively.

Without this amazing free gift, children would struggle to thrive and reach their full potential within adult life.

Today is the first every International Day of Play.

Finally, there is a day that recognises the importance of play within people’s lives.

We call these little people ‘Warriors’ because the fight is real within these four walls.

Hospital is tough, not just physically but mentally and play is the little light relief they need to survive.

For Billy and many other children within this hidden world, being able to play is vital for their overall wellbeing and recovery.

It is seen as one of the best protections against anxiety and trauma.

So, for Billy he was very lucky to have a Play Therapist within his hospital setting, as many don’t have the needed funds to provide such a luxury service.

The Play Team should be an essential service within all hospitals, as this little pocket of light can create an environment where children are more willing to except their fate.

These Play Therapist gain trust when others have failed, they educate and spend time when others don’t have the time to do so and also, they install hope.

For Billy, his amazing Play Therapist was Louise aka Wheez.

In Billy’s early days, he struggled to say Louise and Wheez popped out and it stuck.

Louise was Billy’s guardian angel within this hidden world.

Louise was the protector of play for Billy and many other children within the ward.

Billy still talks about Louise and likes to visit her when he attends the hospital.

Billy’s love for Louise is real and without her, I don’t think Billy’s outlook would have been so bright.

For Billy and many others there is a need to preserve, promote, and prioritize play, so they can reap the rewards and thrive to their full potential.

The power of play is real.

Remember you may not feel strong but you are
