In times gone by, Sunday has been known as the day of rest within the Western world.
For some this symbolic day was for worship, and for others it was a day to spend with the family.
Either way, it wasn’t a day for chores, work or over doing it.
But, over the years this sacred day has turned into an average week day.
And this became more apparent when the Sunday Trading Act 1994 came into force, which allowed the selling and buying of goods on this precious day.
Which over the years has opened the flood gates to many other symbolic days becoming fairly average.
In my opinion, life has got to busy and unfortunately this has created a routine that is no longer predictable.
For example,
Work days are not set days anymore.
Families need two incomes to survive.
Child care is expensive which has created parents to work in a shift pattern.
Extended family live apart and if they do live close, the rise in pension age has prevented vital help to their children.
The emphasises on education is high.
Children have clubs that are considered just as important as their education.
I suppose what I’m trying to say is, life is very different to 50 years ago.
Like most, we are caught up in this unpredictable world.
Where things don’t make sense at times.
But we do try to find time for each other, maybe not Sunday or the symbolic day, but a day that suits us all.
Over the years we have had to ignore dates in the calendar because Billy wasn’t well enough to play.
But when Billy was on the mend, we would put the symbolic day back into the calendar.
It can be hard and upsetting when you think everyone is having a good time and you are just about existing.
But I have found if you dwell on these things, they can eat you up in side.
To the point it can make you bitter.
So, we try not to do this and make the most of the new calendar.
As a family we’re not religious, but we do respect the moto ‘family day.’
Today, it has fallen on a Sunday.
So, with a bit of encouragement by Bill to get out of bed early.
We made it to the allotment to enjoy the morning chorus put on by mother nature.
Whilst we were there, we needed to do some chores and pick some early crops.
So, a punnet of strawberries later and handful of hard neck garlic scapes collected.
We were ready for our feast today, which I will call
‘Family Lunch’
rather than ‘Sunday Lunch’
Hard Neck Garlics Scapes
Are a bonus crop, that you can harvest in May/June time.
They are the flower tops of the garlics.
It is best to break the scapes of so the plant can put all its energy into growing the bulb.
The scapes are great in a stir fry, salads, pickled or fermented.
But really, they are diverse and can be substituted into any recipe that uses garlic.
Remember you may not feel strong but you are
